Writing time:
I have started to replace stories I read with my kids with more Indigenous focused stories. I try to use the philosophy of "instead of this, I'll do this". For example, I had a book I would use to talk about and then write about feelings. This year, instead of reading a book with Care Bears, I read "My Heart Fills With Happiness." The students then wrote about what fills their hearts with happiness.

Centers:
I have added Indigenous stories to as center choices. I was speaking with my colleague (Laura Dillon) and she talked about how our classroom should act like a mirror. Children should be able to see a reflection of themselves within the classroom. I have added these books in centers so the children can have more exposure to Indigenous culture.
Guided Reading:
I have started to us the turtle island voices resources during guided reading. The books focus on First Nation, Metis and Inuit culture and beliefs. The conversations with the students is very reflective.

Arts Integration:
I've been trying to make more connections to the land. For stations of the cross, we used rocks to make our pictures.

Elizabeth led the students through an art project about animals in our area. They created pictures based on their favorite animals and animals that live in this region. We focused on the connection to the land.
