The Plan.....
We launched our project in mid October. Our driving question was "Why is daily physical activity important?". Students participated in a class discussion where I wrote their ideas on the chart paper so we could reference them later. Students were guided by the question "As Fitness Directors, how can we encourage our friends to be active?" Students listed different choices that they could use to teach their Grade 1 friends. As mentioned in PBL in the Elementary Grades on page 24, "Students are allowed to make some choices about the products to be created, how they work and how they use their time..." Students came up with some really neat ideas about possible products for their showcase. We linked a writing prompt on their favorite way to keep active and finished off the launch with a dance party!
We had a number of guest presenters come in and show the students different activities that they are passionate about. We had representatives from Pure Fitness and Motion Fitness running circuits and offering a kick boxing lesson. We also had a community member come and do 'stretching and relaxation' with the students. We were able to think of resources in the community that would enhance the experience of the students and show the passions of community members (pg 28 PBL in the Elementary Grades).
Stretching and Relaxation
Circuit Training with Marie from Pure Fitness
Marla from Motion Fitness teaching Cardio Box.
The Showcase
We invited the Grade 1 class to be the audience for the project. Some parents were also able to attend. We even had students from older grades pop by towards the end of the day to check out the projects. It was wonderful to see so many people support our classes. Students gathered in the learning commons as their friends and parents walked around to look at their presentations. Students had prepared what they were going to say and were also ready to answer questions. They did an amazing job!
