Students are grouped many ways in grade 1. Students have table groups. In the example above, it is the snowman on the table. The white card beside the snowman was used for a writing activity. The charts above also show literacy center groups and math center groups. Students are also able to choose partners or where they would like to sit - either at tables or elsewhere in the room. These groups are based on friendships, levels, interest, strengths and/or how students get along.
What impact did flexible grouping have on student learning?
Flexible grouping allows for different levels of support. When groups are organized and planned beforehand, learning can begin right away and therefore, instructional time can be maximized. In Grade 1, students are excited to work with different students and the quality of work has increased.
Reflection on flexible grouping:
Flexible grouping entails preparation before the lesson instead of making groups on the fly. Purposeful planning of groups allows for deeper learning and conversations, as well as support where students need it. I am discovering that grouping and regrouping students in a variety of ways throughout the school day allows students to be more productive and interested in learning. Students are grouped and regrouped according to specific goals, activities, and individual needs depending on the activity. I have also allowed for more flexibility when choosing table groups. In the picture on the left, students are able to choose their spots during fluency practice. Students 'reserve' their spot before they head out for recess. When they return to class, they sit down and read their books in their boxes.
The picture on the right shows a student grouping used during writing time. I used their name cards to assign seating for the table group. These students were grouped together as they were working on adding punctuation in their writing pieces.
