In the pictures and videos below, the students explored a question about Advent candles. The question is in the slide show. The video shows a group working together. The students were able to explain their thinking and both used the classroom environment to help them.
The series of pictures below shows students during Alicia's problem solving lesson. Students were put in random groups of two (one group of 3). Students had to find their matching partner using colors of unifix cubes. Groups were presented a series of questions and were able to show their thinking with pictures, numbers and words on mini whiteboards.
In the pictures below, the students used the windows in the learning commons as vertical surfaces.
In the pictures below, our class participated in a slow chat on Twitter #mtgr1. The picture showed snowmen and the question was "What math do you see?". Some students saw the 8 snow men. Some saw the 16 buttons, some saw the 24 snowballs. They showed their thinking with pictures, numbers and words on mini-white boards.
Above is another question the students worked on in small groups and on vertical surfaces. The problem was "George has 7 horses on his farm that need new horse shoes. How many horse shoes does his family need to buy?" Students collaborated very well together. They helped each other and were able to show their thinking in pictures, numbers and words.
This is an example of a conference. They usually do a gallery walk while the group presents at their vertical surface. The students moved around and listened to how the group came up with their solution.
